Faux Food: Favorite Sweet Treat

Saltine Toffee Cookies

This sounds disgusting right.  Using saltines to make a cookie.  I thought my friend Ms. Becky was crazy and dear Lawd I popped one in my mouth.  There is a reason these things are called crack on the internet.  I truly don't see the difference between the addictive properties between these and a full on crack rock to an addict.

Saltine Toffee Cookies: Ms. Faux's Crack Rocks

Ingredients

  • 4 Ounces of Saltines (She used regular saltines but you can also use Ritz Crackers)
  • 1 Cup Butter
  • 1 Cup Dark Brown Sugar
  • 2 Cups Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 3/4 Cup Chopped Pecans
Preparation

  • Preheat oven 400 Degrees F (205 Degrees C)
  • Line cookie sheet in a single layer of crackers
  • In a saucepan combine the sugar and the butter. Bring to a boil and boil for 3 minutes. Immediately pour over saltines and spread t cover crackers completely.
  • Bake at 400 degrees F (205 degrees C) for 5 to 6 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over the top. Let sit for 5 minutes. Spread melted chocolate and top with chopped nuts. Cool completely and break into pieces.

I mean... these things were like heaven and if you are a crack addict this is heaven...

Crack Rocks: A Crackhead's Heaven

Ms. Becky you truly are my dealer of delicious.  Thank you so much.

Faux Fave Book: Gloria Steinem - My Life On the Road

So I had a whirlwind trip home for the holidays.  23 hours of driving in 72 hours.  It was exhausting, but never boring as I wandered in and out of my music, my friend Mr. Arnie's blog, "Hello From the Magic Tavern," available on iTunes and my new audiobook, "Gloria Steinem, My Life on the Road."

Hello From the Magic Tavern (Available on iTunes)
I will cover Arnie's podcast in another blog, but the thing I listened to in its entirety is Gloria Steinam's, "My Life on the Road."  It was a beautiful telling of stories of how the road shaped her life.  From the women she met, to events she organized, her story is one of inspiration and pride in being a woman.

It was amazing as she never comes off as pompous, actually quite the opposite as she is terrified of public speaking which seems different for a feminist organizer.  She however knew her weaknesses and utilized other women's strengths to get their collective points across.

Gloria Steinam has long been a woman that I admired as she is what we all collectively know as the face of feminism.

Whether then or now, her story resonates and the part that I loved most is her really tying this all back to the fact that women are her tribe.  They are what inspire her and what has inspired her amazing life.

I highly recommend the book, which is available at Amazon.com (in the form of hardcover, paperback, audio cd or kindle) or how I chose to enjoy on iTunes.

So worth the read or the listen.  Such an incredible and amazing lady who speaks so many truths about the incredible and amazing women she has met on the road who have shaped her life.

Carol's Daughter Acai Skincare Line

So Ms. Faux introduced herself to a line that she had forgotten about but delved back into tonight.  The reason I had moved away from it is that I didn't think it would be moisturizing enough in this horrible Chicago, cold and skin dehydrating weather.  I was wrong.  I present to you...

Carol's Daughter Acai Skin Care Line

Now I must apologize as I cannot find the exfoliating toner anywhere online to link and I think they may be discontinuing this line as it is difficult to find in stores.  I originally found mine in Target, but went there tonight and this was no longer available.  The foaming face wash and sheer face lotion are still available HERE ON THE CAROL'S DAUGHTER WEBSITE.

The products range from $8-$12 each and are so moisturizing I just can't believe it and am sad that I didn't use these sooner.  Also they have a wonderful scent much like that of Aveda.

Seriously tonight I was thinking about what mask I would have to put on to make sure my skin stays moisturized and this lotion was enough.  The super sudsy foaming face wash also was just amazing and washed away all traces of my make up.

Along with just a solid product I have to say Carol's Daughter's mission is lovely and inspiring.

I'm so happy I reintroduced myself to these wonderful products as it has encouraged me to try others.

Perfect "Hot" Cold Remedy Drinks To Help Fight Inflamation #3

Once again... still not a doctor.  These all natural cold remedies seem to work well for me though, so here is the third.  Please note Ms. Faux is also partial to a Hot Toddy which she blogged about before in Ms. Faux's Favorite Cold Remedies. For information click this link..  But onward, here is my final favorite anti-inflammatory beverage to help fight colds.

Cinnamon Cold Buster

Ingredients
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • ½ tsp finely grated ginger
  • ¼ tsp ground turmeric
  • ½ tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • ½ tsp raw honey
  • 1 pinch cinnamon
  • For extra cold-fighting powers, add in 1 drop of colloidal silver.

Instructions
  1. Boil 1 cup of water. Add in all ingredients and stir.
Why?

Like honey, cinnamon is antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial.  These properties help destroy viral bacteria and reinforce immune response.

Similarly, colloidal silver is highly antibacterial and antiviral and has also been shown to prvent viruses from getting worse.  However don't take so much that you become that blue man who went blue from taking so much colloidal silver.  Seriously.  He had to work real hard for that.

So there you go.  I would love to know if you have any other cold busting remedies.

What does Ms. Faux think?

These were brought by Ms. Faux's friend Ms. Nicole.  They are Faux approved and the first thing that came out of my mouth when I saw them was... "pairs well with a cabernet sauvignon."  I mean... not that I would know... or Ms. Nicole would know... o.k. we both know and are better people for it.  It is the perfect salt and sweet and so very delicious.  I believe you can also get these at CostCo.

What does Ms. Faux think?

This was another gift from Ms. Nicole and her reason is that she cannot stand cold feet.  Ms. Faux does agree.  She may live in the North, but her blood is true southerner.  Ms. Nicole mentioned how her feet have stayed warm in a pair of tennis shoes (not the best for cold climates) when wearing these socks.  Ms. Faux attests they are some of the most perfect boot socks as well because they keep your feet warm and are quite slim.

Not a Costco member, you can also get the Kirkland's Signature Ladies Merino Wool Trail Sock for $25.99 at Amazon.com.  Seriously though, you know a friend who can get you into CostCo.

Wha does Ms. Faux think?

These were lovingly given by her dear friend Ms. Lisa.  One thing Ms. Lisa cares about more than she does herself is what we are doing with this world of ours.  She is wonderful in that way that she cares for those things that are generally ignored or not cared for.

Aside from the beauty in that, these cards are just gorgeous and we know we all would love getting one of these in the mail.

What is it?  According to SmockPaper.com...

Since I gave you the Smock Paper description above I'm just going to mention the product here.

What does Ms. Faux think?

Again, it is as beautiful as is Ms. Lisa.  I love the idea of having a notepad on me at all times for ideas.  I find I use them more than actually my iphone and am more likely to note the idea if I have them.  These are again not only eco friendly, but gorgeous.  Also... I just poked around the site a bit and everything in there is just gorgeous... so go now.

And that is it.  Another successful Favorite Things Party in the bag.  And what a bag it is.  Just look.

Think that was all?  Nope.  We ate and drank.  I'm hoping to stalk down a few Faux Favorite Recipes of the delicious treats I shoved in my face.

Ms. Faux's Favorite Things Party Haul: Part 5

Skip the exposition.  Check back with Blogs 1-4 for that.  Let's go...

What is it?  According to Sephora.com...

What it is:
An unadulterated black mascara for dramatically full and voluminous lashes.

What it does:
This magic mascara is like a set of sexy black false eyelashes...without the glue! With its famously big brush and volumizing formula, this matte-black mascara builds beautiful, bodacious lashes.

What else you need to know:
Wear it alone or apply They’re Real! Mascara to the tips of lashes for a glossy finish.

What does Ms. Faux think?

This gift I think was brought by the lovely Ms. Jill as one of the most amazing mascaras.  Well hunties she is right.  Benefit is known for their amazing mascaras.  One of Ms. Faux's favorites is the They're Real brand, well because Ms. Faux wants to be a drag queen.  The finish is a bit more glossy and fake looking which is why I love the Benefit Bad Gal lash, because it give a very volumized, but natural looking matte finish.  Ms. Jill also brought along a Sephora gift card and lets be real that is every woman's dream.

What is it?  According to VosgesCocolate.com...

Mo's Bacon Chocolate Chip Pancake Mix

Pancake mix and Mo's® Bacon Bar chocolate chunks. Each batch yields approximately 8, 5–inch pancakes. 2 batches per container. Yields 16 pancakes

The newest member of the bacon + chocolate family combines the Mo's Bacon Bar with fluffy flapjacks. These buttermilk pancakes are spotted with chunks of our most popular Exotic Chocolate Bar, which combines fruitwood smoked bacon and Alder sea salt with deep milk chocolate. Treat your family or weekend guests to these unbelievable pancakes for breakfast OR dinner. Mo's Bacon Chocolate Chip Pancake Mix makes a most pleasing hostess gift for a weekend retreat.

Learn how to make these scrumptious pancakes with Katrina Markoff's easy to follow Mo's Bacon Chocolate Chip Pancake recipe.

What does Ms. Faux think?

This gift was given by the lovely Ms. Caitlin and was stolen once by Ms. Sarah (Ms. Faux's nemesis  j/k), but as a joke it was stolen by Ms. Faux and well... Ms. Faux's a vegetarian so joke is on her as it is FULL OF BACON.  However... Ms. Faux does joke about being a bacon vegetarian as it is the only meat she misses.

Seriously though Vosges calls their Chocolate Haut Chocolat and for good reason.  It is chocolate, but elevated.  Ms. Faux is in love with their dark chocolates and can easily name the Smoke & Stout, Black Salt Caramel, & Guajillo & Chipotle Chile as some of her favorite candy bars that are consistently in her chocolate drawer.  Don't judge.  I have a drawer.

Still joke is on Ms. Sarah because Ms. Faux likes to entertain and how much better than to give her guests some delicious bacon/chocolate pancakes.

What is it?  According VosgesChocolate.com...

Bacon Caramel Toffee ½ lb

We cook the fruitwood smoked uncured bacon to order, break it into pieces by hand and stir it into our classic, sweet butter toffee recipe. Coated in 45% cacao deep milk chocolate and sprinkled with Alderwood smoked salt

Includes: ½ lb Bacon Toffee

GLUTEN-FREE
What does Ms. Faux think?

Once again and for the same reasons above... this chocolate treat was from Ms. Caitlin and will be put to good use for guests through Ms. Faux.  Also... I have had their toffee before and delish.

What is it?  According to SurLaTable.com...

DESCRIPTION

Easily preserve avocados for later use with these reusable silicone covers. To use, simply push the leftover half into the appropriately sized hugger and place it in the fridge until you’re ready to use the rest—a tight seal locks in moisture and prevents exposure to circulating air, helping prevent spoiling and dehydration.

To use, simply slip the narrow end of the avocado into the hugger, then pull the flexible hugger up over the back until the cut half is completely enclosed. Thanks to a reversible “pit pocket,” avocado halves fit both with and without their pits.

Food-safe, silicone huggers are BPA- and phthalate-free and dishwasher-, freezer- and microwave-safe. Set of two includes one small and one large Avocado Hugger.
  • Manufacturer: Farberware
  • Includes: 1 small hugger, 1 large hugger
  • Material: Silicone
  • Care: Top-rack dishwasher safe

What does Ms. Faux think?

This is genius.  This gift was given by Ms. Sarah who explained that she has a daughter that eats an avocado each day.  But the in between the avocado as you know can go bad.  These help to preserve it.

The avocado going bad is due to oxidation, however if you cut out the air getting to it...  Ding. Ding. Ding.  No oxidation.

How great are these.  This is another thing like Ms. Marla's Dr. Lipp balm that Ms. Faux ordered immediately.  Also found other covers for rounded vegetables.  Take a look on Amazon.com.

What is it?  According to SurLaTable.com...

Great for prepping kale, Swiss chard and collards, this compact, handy tool easily removes the tough central ribs from these healthy, nutrient-packed greens. With small holes for stripping herbs such as rosemary, oregano and thyme, the Looseleaf speeds up time-consuming prep tasks and makes a versatile addition to any kitchen.

What does Ms. Faux think?

Yet again mind blown and this sent me straight to amazon.com where I purchased one.  Here is a tip ya'll... go to Amazon.com.  These things are sold out everywhere that I looked.  They have a cult following.  Oh my god I've joined a cult!  Worth it.  I can't wait to pull my first herbs through this lovely little tool.

Now I'm going to finish out Ms. Sarah's gift below so this one is going to have 6.  Deal with it.

What is it?  According to SurLaTable.com...

Garlic is an important ingredient in many of our favorite recipes, but all cooks hate the odor it leaves on their hands when preparing it. We love this tool for solving this problem and quickly peeling garlic cloves without passing the odor onto your hands. Just place clove inside garlic roller and hand on middle of roller, then push down and roll—it’s that simple. 1¾" d x 1½" h x 6" l x 1½" w. Dishwasher safe.

What does Ms. Faux think?

This is genius.  Ms. Faux has long utilized her trusty side of the knife to bust the clove and then peel the garlic thus getting her hands smelly... now I don't have to and am a better person for it.  Well at least better for those people I put my hands in their face, which is everyone.  Yet again went off to Amazon, where you can also find these and ordered this immediately.

So there you go....  Stay tuned for the last and final installment.

Perfect "Hot" Cold Remedy Drinks To Help Fight Inflamation #2

Here is another of Ms. Faux's favorite cold busting hot drinks.

The Lemon Buster

Ingredients
  • 1 lemon
  • 1-inch piece of ginger
  • 1-2 dashes of cayenne pepper
  • 1 dash of turmeric powder
  • 1 drop of mint extract
  • 1-2 drops stevia (if desired)
Instructions
  1. Juice or blend the lemon and ginger, then add the cayenne pepper, turmeric and mint. Stir. Add enough hot water to double the size of the mixture.
Why does this help???

  • Lemon naturally detoxifies.  It bulks up your immune system and fuels your cold-figting stores of vitamin c.
  • Ginger is a natural expectorant and breaks up the mucus in lungs while soothing sore throats and sinus aches.
  • Curcumin, which is found in turmeric has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help to continue to break up chest congestion and acts as a cough suppresent.
  • Mint has a natural methol component and is a natural decongestant the breaks up phlegm and decongestion

Ms. Faux's Favorite Things Party Haul: Part 4

Part 4.  Skipping the introductions.  Go back and check out the previous 3.  Let's go.

So the first gift came by way of Ms. Tamara from a lovely gift shop here in Chicago, Illinois called Hazel.  Check them out here at HazelChicago.com.  From there she bought...

What is it?  According to Store.Moleskine.com...

This basic, yet classic notebook is one of the best selling Moleskine notebooks. This reliable travel companion, perfect for calculations, thoughts and passing notes, has a cardboard bound cover with rounded corners, acid free paper, a bookmark, an elastic closure and an expandable inner pocket that contains the Moleskine history.

What does Ms. Faux think?

Ms. Tamara noted that she has in past bought notebooks and journals that she never uses and then started to.  She in particularly uses this one and it is great to keep thoughts, ideas, etc... all up in there.  Trust if you know Ms. Tamara she has some hair brained ideas that Ms. Faux thinks makes her a genius.  She accompanied this gift with some lovely Precise V7 Premium Rolling Ball Pens $6.49 at Staples.com.

Ms. Faux has used these pens and a Moleskine at work and loves it for it's super clean look and banded closure which keeps everything in its place.

What is it?  According to Starbucks.com...

Introducing our most spirit-warming chai tea ever, created in collaboration with Oprah Winfrey. For every 2 ounces of Oprah Chai Tea purchased, we will donate $1.00 to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation.
The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation will further support educational opportunities for young people, including National CARES Mentoring Movement, Pathways to College and U.S. Dream Academy.
Learn more at Oprah.com/OprahChai.

What does Ms. Faux think?

Hunties it is from Ms. Faux's mother so it's perfection.  Just kidding.  To be honest I have never tried it as I rarely go to Starbucks.  However Ms. Allie who gave the gift noted that many people in the Starbucks that she works at will not purchase this tea a lot of times because it is in alignment with Ms. O.  Such a shame as it supports a good cause and according to Ms. Allie is one of the best Chai teas they have.  Makes Ms. Faux want to go get some Ms. O.  Okay... I'll stop.  But Ms. Allie won't stop and supplied our next gift as well...

What is it?  According to Starbucks.com...

Simply scoop tea into this infuser, place in your mug and pour water directly over tea. Even the smallest tea leaves will steep perfectly through the tea infuser's fine mesh. Made of 18/8 stainless steel. "Teavana®" printed on handle. Dishwasher safe. Do not microwave.

What does Ms. Faux think?

Hunties... it is a tea infuser.  What am I to say?  Good steel.  Beautiful presentation.  It is a tea infuser.  That being said Teavana is Ms. Faux's absolute favorite tea place in all of the nation so if there is going to be a company that makes banging out some steel for tea special it is going to be Teavana.  That being said I have had Teavana diffusers in the past and I will admit I have never been diappointed with their product.  Probably why they are my favorite.

What does Ms. Faux think?

This product was given by Ms. Clayton, a self described, person who likes to drink.  Why?  Because this product just has something in it that hydrates you and brings your face back when it is feeling dehydrated, dark and lack luster.  Ms. Faux can attest.  Also... this is a cult favorite among beauty bloggers.  It is my favorite thing to just put on when I go out for groceries on Sunday, because it has a somewhat magical property that makes you not look like a total mess.  This is absolutely a Faux Fave.

What is it?  According to Sephora.com...

What it is:
A lightweight oil to deeply hydrate and treat skin, hair, and nails.

What it is formulated to do:
This legendary, 100 percent pure Argan Oil is rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids to deeply hydrate and nourish skin. Grown organically in Morocco, the multitasking formula contains astonishing healing, conditioning, and antiaging properties to create a nourished, youthful-looking complexion. It easily absorbs into skin, delivering a fresh, dewy glow, and keeps you looking beautiful from head to toe. Great for all skin types including sensitive and acne-prone skin, it may also be used to treat split ends and soften cuticles.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
- Parabens
- Sulfates
- Phthalates

What else you need to know:
Pure Argan Oil is first cold pressed to ensure the best quality, highest-grade oil. It is housed in a recyclable glass bottle and purchased from women's cooperatives in Morocco to support their social and economic welfare. These cooperatives work within a UNESCO biosphere reserve that ensures the protection and reforestation of Argan trees.

Research results:
In a 4-week clinical test:
- 83% of women showed significantly improved skin hydration
- Participants saw a visible reduction in coarse wrinkles and fine lines in the eye area

What does Ms. Faux think?

This gift was brought by Ms. Audra.  Her reasonings are the exact same reasons that Ms. Faux loves this product as well.  Josie Maran was like, "the brand," that brought to the forefront the absolute benefits of Argan Oil.  It is delightful in what it can do.  Since then other brands, most notably Physician's Formula have jumped on the bandwagon.

Seriously though as Ms. Audra explained and Ms. Faux can attest this oil is perfect for everywhere... skin, hair, nails... just toss it in your purse and go.  For those that want a bit lighter of an application Josie Maran has come out with their Josie Maran Light Argan Oil that is a little less heavy depending on your skin type.

For those afraid of oils and your face... trust oil is rarely the problem of breakouts.  Those are usually oil and bacteria based.  Also if you are thinking you are breaking out due to oil, think again.  It could just as easy be because your skin is dead and dehydrated.  I started using oils a few years ago and my skin has been better for it.

So there is five more and even more to come.
