Fab Five Friday: 1.22.2016

So I'm starting off celebrating the life of Alan Rickman who was in one of my favorite movies of all time, Love Actually.  Seriously I watch it over and again.  He was incredibly wonderful and talented.  By today's standards in Hollywood you do not get to where you are based on his look, which I happen to find extremely gorgeous.  His talent allowed him to rise above all of that crap.  The way it should be.

Now... onto the products that have the talent as well to help me not look like crap this week.  I'm gonna warn you, most of them have to do with skin because Chicago weather has been unforgiving.

What is it?  According to Beauty.com...

This protective repairing balm offers complete lip care and regenerates nail contours.
An intensive formula concentrated with precious active ingredients: Restructuring and soothing Essential Rose Wax, nourishing and emollient Floral Oils, hydrating and anti-aging Bio-ceramides, anti free radical and protective UV filters.

What does Ms. Faux think?

Well Ms. Faux has gone on record with this product in the past.  For more on that click HERE.  Seriously though I put this on only at night as sort of a mask.  It is one of those rare beautiful products that help my seriously dry lips overnight.

Now I do know it has a steep price.  Mine was a gift.  But I'm not sure I wouldn't go out and re-purchase after I use it all.  And to be fair... this will last me a long time because I mainly use it at night.

If you don't like the crazy light color, know that it comes in TINTED OPTIONS as well.

What is it?  According to Kiehls.com...

  • Regenerates, restores, and replenishes skin for smoother, healthier skin
  • Works with the skin's natural nocturnal activity - when skin is most receptive to repairing itself from daily aggressors - to dramatically restore skin
  • 99.8% naturally-derived and paraben-free oil for face
  • A customer favorite

So I have given my Sunday Riley Luna Oil a break this week in order to try out Kiehl's.  I do absolutely love the smell as it has a lavender scent that is perfect at night.  What I'm not sure is if my skin is just so dry (which is possible) that this doesn't feel as emollient as the Sunday Riley oil.  I have been layering it with the product below which has been working amazingly.

What is it?  According to Sephora.com...

What it is:
A gel-cream that 'floods' the skin with a rush of refreshing hydration and minimizes the appearance of pores for soft, smooth, supple skin for normal to combination skin types, including oily skin, and dry skin types looking for a lightweight moisturizer.

What it is formulated to do:
Aqua Bomb is an ultra-lightweight, mineral oil-free gel-cream that instantly cools and refreshes skin while providing intensive hydration. This formula contains a blend of apothecary herbs, including antioxidant-rich lady's mantle, which helps neutralize skin-damaging free radicals, improves skin elasticity, and minimizes the appearances of pores. This refreshing cream is formulated to 'burst' when applied, releasing a flood of weightless moisture onto skin, and then absorb completely for a healthy, smooth, supple appearance.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
- Parabens
- Sulfates
- Phthalates

What else you need to know:
This product is dermatologist tested and free of mineral oils, petrolatum, synthetic preservatives, dyes, and fragrances, and animal origin ingredients. Belif's The The True Cream Aqua Bomb is a 2015 Self Approved Beauty award winner.

What does Ms. Faux think?

This has been the perfect accompaniment to the Kiehl's oil because it is not heavily scented and therefore does not counteract the delightful lavender scent of the Midnight Recovery Oil.

This product on its own packs a punch in the moisture department without heavy on the skin.  With this combo I'm managing to take on the Chicago harsh winter.

What is it?  According to Walgreens.com....

All-in-1 Makeup Remover & Cleanser removes waterproof makeup + cleanses + refreshes. No rinse, no harsh rubbing. For face, lips, eyes.  Micelle Technology.  No Oil, Alcohol, Fragrance.  Surprisingly powerful yet gentle to skin with Micellar Technology. Like a magnet, micelles capture and lift away dirt, oil and makeup without harsh rubbing, leaving skin perfectly clean and refreshed without over-drying.
1-800-370-1925

Saturate a cotton pad. To Remove Eye Makeup: Hold pad over closed eyes for a few seconds, then gently wipe without harsh rubbing. To Clean Skin & Remove Face Makeup: Gently wipe all over until skin is completely clean from makeup and impurities. Use daily, AM/PM. No need to rinse.

What does Ms. Faux think?

I have been on the lookout for a replacement for Bioderma since it is hella expensive and not as easy as just popping into your drugstore.  You have to order it.

Most micellar waters I have tried have just not stacked up to Bioderma.  It doesn't sting my eyes point blank.  Something that the Simple Micellar Water does do.  Now... this particular one (made for removal of waterproof make up) is more gentle than the Simple Micellar Water, however still stings a bit.  I am going to try their other formulation (in the pink bottle) and see if it fairs any better.

This however is good at removing make up.

What is it?  According to MACcosmetics.com...

A lightweight, fluid concealer that provides medium to full coverage with a comfortable, natural matte finish. Gives a smoother, flawless-looking finish on skin. Helps to conceal flaws, dark spots, skin discolouration and under-eye circles.

Seventeen 2014 The Besties: Best Concealer

What does Ms. Faux think?

Well... Ms. Faux doesn't use a lot of concealers unless she has the occasional dark under eye issue or spots.

I realize I'm a bit blessed that my undereye area is doing alright without concealer, but those damn SPOTS!.  I think I have had a few breakouts mainly due to the current state of my dry skin.  After all I can do to get them under control I have found this is the best concealer all around.  Funny that it won a Seventeen award because my skin has felt like a teenager this week.

Anyway... This stuff just stays.  They say it has a 15 hour wear.  I'm not sure about those claims, because I take off my make up before that time frame, however... it does outdo all of my other concealers in this department.

I love that it is in a pump so less chance of bacteria (especially when dotting it on blemishes) and it works perfectly on my blemishes as well as under the eyes.  In other words... if traveling I would only have to pack this one.

It is an amazing formula and does not crease on me.

Honorable Mention:

I have got to give some love to my beloved Clairsonic.  Though I haven't ever mentioned it in a Fab Five Friday, I have to give credit where due and I reach for this when my skin is just angry at me.  Besides though not a fab five friday award recipent, it always makes Ms. Faux's Favorites and wins those awards.  For more information on the Clairsonic, click HERE.

So there you go.  The fab five products that have gotten me out the door.  Stay tuned because along with blogs on Spring/Summer make up trends, Ms. Faux has some reviews coming up on some of her favorite products to beat the dry winter as well as another blog on amazing oils and how to use them on your skin and hair.

Spring/Summer Make Up Trend: GET THE LOOK!

Spring/Summer 2016 Make Up Trend:
Dewy & Healthy

So yesterday I mentioned one spring/summer 2016 make up trend seen on the runways was one that Ms. Faux loves.  Clean, natural, dewy and healthy!!!  Since this is a look that Ms. Faux has been rocking for years as it is her favorite, here are a few cosmetics to help you there.  Some old.  Some new.  All amazing.

Primer

Primers are important and no one does primers like BECCA cosmetics.  Seriously.  My favorite however is...

BECCA Backlight Priming Filter - $38 at Sephora.com - The idea of this primer is a glow from within.  It just makes you look like you are drinking all of your water.  You can use under your make up, alone or mixed in.  It really is a gorgeous primer for the dewy look.

Need a more affordable version?  Check out...

Hard Candy Sheer Glow All The Way in Blushing Babe $8 at Walmart.com - While I don't think this is as good as Becca, for the price it is solid.  Why?  You get so much.  It is 1.8 fluid oz, which is more than most other drugstore illuminators for a fraction of a price.

Foundation

Foundations are the key to your make up so I do not mind spending in this arena.  My favorite again belongs to Becca.  Seriously... this company gets the idea of the word glow.  My favorite?  It's brand new.  It is the...

BECCA Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation - $44 at Sephora.com - it is gorgeous and formulated to allow your skin to shine through with a soft focus glow.  It is water based and again the key to this look is moisture.  Not much more wet than water.  Look for other brands however if this doesn't work for you.  Stila also has their Aqua Glow Serum Foundation and I also like Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer - Illuminating.

Now for a more affordable option and one that I reach for time and again...

LA Girl Pro BB Cream - $4.99 at Walgreens.com - Now while it isn't full of illuminators, there is something about this product that leaves a very moisturized look to the skin.  It just looks healthy and clean without being weighed down.  Paired with an illuminating primer would send this to a whole other level.

I'm not kidding.  This product performs like it's high end counterparts to give a perfectly clean, fresh and dewy look.

Blush

For blushes I find for the dewy look it is better to look into liquid stains or cream blushes.  one of my favorites is...

Perricone MD No Blush, Blush - $35 at Sephora.com - It gives the perfect, barely there flush, hence the name.  This really is my favorite in this department so while there are probably some drugstore versions I'm going to limit myself to this one because I think the biggest area to pull off this glow is on the cheek which in turn is why my highlighter is also going to be a Perricone MD product without a comparable drugstore version.  It is...

Highlighters

Perricone MD No Highlighter, Highlighter - $35 at Sephora.com - Again much like the blush this gives just a barely there glow.  Again... hence the name.  If I were look for another to put here I am going to point you in the direction of the BECCA

It is again an incredible highlight and much like the Perricone MD one blends in beautifully.  Should you need a drugstore option, I don't think it comparable, but L'Oreal's Magic Lumi Highlighter.

Eyeliner

When looking for an eyeliner you want to look for something that is not going to smudge and could essentially be waterproof since the look you are going for here is tightlining.  Tightlining is lining your eyes in the lashline so that you get the look of extra thick lashes rather than someone wearing eyeliner for effect.  Although they have done the lower lashline as well below, I prefer just the top for this look.

The best liner I found for tightlining is...

MAC Kohl - $16.50 at MACcosmetics.com - While I prefer, "Teddy," (pictured here) it is the formulation that I like rather than the color here.  Though I do think you need to get a color that matches your lashes.  I like the, "Teddy," version because it softens and is less harsh than black

I will say a drug store option would be...

L'Oreal Infallible Eyeliner $8.99 at Ulta.com - Again like the MAC it is a precise line and comes in several colors.  If Teddy didn't exist this would probably be what I would choose.

Mascara

Again you are going for a very natural look with this look.  In saying that there is one mascara I reach for and I'm going to completely skip the high end here.  It is...

Maybelline Lash Sensational $8.79 at Walgreens.com - It is perfection.  It lenghtens and separates finding each and every lash from the new growth to older growth with it's beautiful lash fanning brush.  Seriously this is my go to for all things natural, but also wanting to look like you were blessed with amazing lashes.

Eyeshadow

For this look less is more.  If I do anything I would use...

Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Minor Sin - $20 at Sephora.com - I know what you are thinking.  "Isn't this a primer?"  Yes it is, but it's sheer champagne color gives a gorgeous barely there dew on the lid.  No eyeshadow needed.  Also its a primer so it isn't going anywhere.

Otherwise at the drugstore...

Sonia Kashuk's Fair & Square Palette $13.69 at Target.com - provides that dewy look with a hint of a pink color and as ya'll know this palette is getting nothin' but love from Ms. Faux.

To create this trend however I would only use the top two colors.  The one on the left if I was looking for some pink in my look and the one on the right if I'm going for a more colorless, dewy sparkle.

Lips

Look to your favorite gloss.  Probably my all time favorite without thinking is...

MAC Lipglass Clear $15 at MACcosmetics.com -   I have loved this lipgloss for 20 years.  Why?  Because it is the perfect clear gloss that stays.  Now it is a little sticky, but that is the price to pay for this hanging around.  Also it pairs well with lip pencils and any lipstick to give almost anything with pigmet a gloss finish.  So if you want a little more of a punch in your lips, grab your favorite nude lip pencil and layer with this gloss.

Then that is is for make up.  No contouring.  No powder.  The idea is to let your skin shine through but just clean it up a bit.  That being said I would likely throw in some Glossier Boy Brow just to give my brows a little more definition without looking done.

Should you be oilier and need a powder however for your T-Zone reach for...

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette - $58 at Sephora.com - Hourglass is another one of those companies who knows how to perfect the complexion without looking like a disco ball.  Their powders are finely milled and have just the right amount of light from within.

or for a more affordable brand...

Sonia Kashuk Brightening Powder $10.39 at Target.com - Again it mattifies for those that need it and brightens in the t-zone area.  Seriously it is a beautifully milled powder but if you can skip this step... DO.

The key to this look however is healthy and clean skin so best to start there.  Get a good moisturizer and skin care routine in general, but above all else the key to this look is...

You know how they say 8 oz. a day.  The actual amount you need is 1/2 your weight in oz. per day.  I was once told that by a nutritionist.  However know while there is always too much of a good thing, if you drink a little too much water I'm pretty sure it ain't gonna hurtcha!  Your skin and urinary tract in fact will likely rejoice.  Also I found this nifty water chart that kind of backs up what my nutritionist told me.

What do you think about this look?

Spring/Summer 2016 Make Up Trends Pt. 1 - NATURAL & HEALTHY!

2016 Beauty Trends

So while looking online for the picture that best encompasses what excites me most about the upcoming 2016 Spring/Summer make-up trends I ran across this picture.  Here is why it excites me.  Long gone here is the trend of contouring withing an inch of your life.

Also on the way out seems to be the heavy matifying look that looks really good in photos but really in life is unforgiving and unflattering.

Unless you have a constant retouching team to take out blemishes and dry spots, matte make up really does just hug all of your imperfections and the lipstick is so drying on your lips.  So in that respect I thank these brilliant fashion designers who typically set the trends during their fashion shows.  This year they surely do not disappoint.

It is the season for pinks, highlights and healthy skin as well as lovely glosses, stains, water lining and tight lining.  In a word... FAVORITES of Faux.  I mean who wants to spend time contouring?  Certainly not me and guess what... I didn't.  It was a trend best left to the professionals... DRAG QUEENS.

So be on the lookout in the upcoming blog posts as I will be presenting some of my favorite cosmetics, tips, tools, new stuff and other trickery to get this amazing look as well as the other big make-up trend of the season... BIG AND BOLD.

2015 Favorites Pt. 2

I just looked up fabulous on google and that is what came up.  I don't know what it is, but I know I love it.  Wait... it's FABULOUS.  That is what it is.  FABULOUS.

So for this blog post I'm delving into some perfume, nails and then skincare.  I planned to do bath and body and then tools, but it was getting out of hand so there will be a part 3 in a few days.  Be on the lookout.
Perfume
So on this one I was listing my all time favorites (one that is is always limited edition released every several years or so), but then I thought, "NO!".  What are the ones you reached for just this year.  So yes while I love LUSH's "Olive Branch," Perfume (it is the one that is limited edition though you can still find the shower gel if you click HERE) OR Jo Malone's Wood Sage & Sea Salt, these are the ones that I discovered this year.

Oribe Cote d'Azure Perfume $95 at Birchbox.com - If any of you have tried the delicious Oribe haircare products you understand the brilliance of that smell.  Well apparently listened to their consumer because they put it in a bottle.  It has top notes of lemon, black currant, bergamot and Sicilian orange, with middle notes of tuberose, blue cyclamen and white jasmine.  It is followed up with basenotes of sandalwood, vetiver and amber, so it is very nuanced.

LaVanilla $58 at LaVanila.com is just the perfect vanilla.  While there are several versions of the vanilla scent from LaVanila, this is my favorite.  It is made from the Madagascar Vanilla Bean which gives it a more mature scent rather than something a 13 year old would wear.  It also has Gogi berry and a botanical blend so this is again much more layered than that of the typical vanilla scents you get.

Nails
Once again I love my OPI, Essie and other nail polishes but I wanted to give you what I discovered this year.  So here we go.

Zoya - Approximately $10 per bottle at Zoya.com - The two lines they released this year that got Ms. Faux on the Zoya bandwagon was their NAKED MANICURE LINE which gives the most impossible perfectly polished look to your nails as it treats, corrects discoloration and helps to protect your nails.

My other favorite from this line was their mattes from their MATTE VELVET LINE.  I admit this was a trend that I thought would pass Ms. Faux by, but Zoya made it happen for me.  Their polishes just made my nails look so very lush and textured.

Sally Hansen Dries Instantly Top Coat - $3.67 at DrugStore.com - This product made it possible for Ms. Faux to want to do her nails more often which is really something that I do not do.  It dries so fast, which is the issue I have with other topcoats and painting my nails in general.  It made the process much more tolerable.

Lip Balm
O.k. this is the last time I'm going to say this because it is applying throughout.  Loves me some other products but these are the two that I discovered this year.

Korres Lip Butter - $12 at Sephora.com - I am going to admit a lot of what I love about this product is the smell, but added to that is that it has a very moisturizing formulation and really does protect and mostly moisturize my lips.  Also it comes in a few colors so it is very flattering.  My favorite was Jasmine.

ByTerry - Baume de Rose - $60 at Beautybar.com - O.k. this is ridiculously expensive, but IT WORKS!  I keep this lip balm by my bed and put it on at night before I drift off.  I wake up in the morning with perfectly moisturized lips.  Now... I don't think this is an all the time lip balm, but more like a mask for your lips as it leaves a very light film on your lips that eventually is absorbed.  It does however come in other colors as well.  Seriously though as a night mask for your lips, I love this stuff.

Skin Care

Bioderma Micellar Water $26.87 at Amazon.com - This delightful French micellar water was only really available in France for many years.  At least that is the only place that I saw it.  I did however manage to find it on Amazon.com.  While I think there are perfectly acceptable drugstore options on the market and they are getting better and better (check out Garnier's new Micellar Water Line) I have to say this is where it all began for me and what I used until I just recently ran out.  Note, due to price I will likely keep replacing now with Garnier's Micellar Water, but there will always be a beautiful spot in my heart for Bioderma.  Easy on the eyes on tough on make up.  The perfect Micellar Water.

Alchimie Forever Kantic Brightening Moisture Mask $60 at Alchimie-Forever.com   Rather than go into great detail click HERE for my previous Faux reviews on this delightful mask.  This just reminded me of it and will be what I treat my face to tonight.

GlamGlow ThirstyMud - $45 at Amazon.com - I refuse to link this product to Sephora anymore (although you can get it there) because it is always cheaper than Sephora's $60 pricetag on Amazon.com.  That being said, this is the perfect mask for 15 minutes, overnight or on a plane.  It is a sheer coverage mask, that may make your skin look a little shiny, but you wash it off and perfectly moisturized skin.  I used this on my trip to Italy and beat the effects of recycled plane air on the skin.

Real Chemistry Luminous 3 Minute Peel - $48 at Amazon.com - This product amazes and disgusts me, but all in the best ways.  As you rub it in you will feel little beads of dead skin start to ball up.  At first I questioned where this was really skin, but as I realized more was coming up on the sides of my cheeks (where I am dryest) than anywhere else I realized, yep it is working.  Also I could visibly see the difference after using this product.  Boscia makes a similar version with their Exfoliating Peel Gel, but I prefer Real Chemistry more.

Caudalie Beauty Elixir - $49 at Sephora.com - This is another Italy trip worthy product.  I love this spray.  While it claims to have clarifying and toning abilities (which I will say yes), I have to admit my favorite element of this product is that it literally wakes you up with it's herbal scented goodness.  Click HERE.  Ms. Faux has given this product much love and a, "Best in Skin," award.

Target Large Cotton Rounds $2.59 at Target.com - Sure these are more expensive than the regular 99 cent bag that you can also get, but they are much larger and made of better material.  They will not shed on your skin and all you will need is one to cleanse your entire face.  I've made the switch.  I will never go back.

Sephora Radiance Cleansing Foam - $15 at Sephora.com - If I'm in my shower and not looking to use my clairsonic and just want a good cleanser for my face 9 times out of 10 I'm going to reach for this.  It isn't drying and really just does a good job cleansing my face.  It also smells of that heavenly Sephora Skincare fragrance.

Coconut Oil - $12.95 at Amazon.com - Seriously if you don't own coconut oil I have to ask, "why not?"  Buy some and put it in your cabinet and forget about it.  Actually you won't forget about it because it has so many uses from teeth to skin to hair to cooking.  Click HERE to look at Ms. Faux's various uses for this miracle substance.

Crystal Collagen Facial Face Mask $11.49 for (5) at Amazon.com - So I use a lot of sheet masks and I have to say hands down this is my favorite.  Not only does the gold mask look and feel decadent on your skin, I do feel more moisturized after having used it.

First Aid Beauty Eye Duty Triple Remedy: Brighten, Depuff and Smooth - $36 at Sephora.com - One reason that I am glad I did this blog is that it re-introduced me to some products that I had forgotten about and this is one of the primary ones.  I don't know what is in this tube, other than magic.  It is perfect for no make up days where you just want your eyes to look a little better or under make up.  This is a tube of miracles for under the eyes.  Seriously... just go buy this magic.

MAC Cleanse Off Oil - $31 at MACcosmetics.com - Now there are other fine make up removing oils out there.  If you are not using an oil to remove your make up I really do have to ask, "why not?"  You should be and this is the best.  They were the first.  What Toyota is to cars MAC is to cleansing oils.  They have just figured it out.

Microfiber Cloths - $13.50 at Amazon.com - I have to admit I use these multiple times daily.  For washing my face, for cleaning brushes, for wiping off my hands.  I love that they are eco-friendly (simply wash and re-use) and they dry much faster than a regular wash cloth.  Add all of that to the fact that they come in an array of colors and these are just something you should always have in your bathroom.  Also they protect your good washcloths form pesky mascara a lipstick stains and area really soft to use on your face.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Skin Brightening Daily Scrub - $6.59 at Drugstore.com - Trust when I say if you want a line of skincare for brightening and don't want to spend a lot of cash, turn to Aveeno's Positively Radiant Line.  Seriously they win tons of awards and while not all of my favorites in any given category, they are all solid products.  This one however is the scrub I reached for most often in my shower in 2015.  It is really gentle for everyday use and good enough to get rid of the scaliest skin.

MAC Fix+ $22 at MACcosmetics.com - MAC is at it again and this time with their primer and setting spray which is their Fix+.  Again they are the trendsetters and they know how to do it right.  If you are looking for the best setting spray, look no further.  Now they did recently come out with a new more moisturizing version that I will review a bit later on this blog so be on the lookout.

Sephora Liquid Moisturizing Skin Concentrate $22 at Sephora.com - is the brilliance of a toner and serum in one.  Ya'll know me.  If I can skip a step I do.  Also... when my skin is just feeling a bit tight or parched, I always reach for this product on one of my favorite Target Ovals.  Rub around and skin feels great again.

So there you go.  There is Ms. Faux best in perfume, nails and skin care.  Stay tunes because coming up is the best in bath and body, tools and hair.

What are some of your favorite products?
