Fab Five Friday: 11.20.2015

So as I mentioned I'm going to give Ms. Ru a break and my lead picture from now on is going to be people and things that I think are fabulous.  For me this week it is the movie The Fantastic Mr. Fox.  I think this movie was made for me and brilliantly has George Clooney and Meryl Streep as the main two characters.  Add in Bill Murray and a slew of others and Wes Anderson is in my mind brilliant.  If you haven't... get on it.

Now... onto the products that made Ms. Faux's life this week.

1.  Wet & Wild Color Icon Palette in Comfort Zone $4.99 at Walgreens.com

What is it?  According to wetnwildbeauty.com...

Eight times the fun in one convenient package! These eyeshadow collections feature eight dynamic and vibrant shades with high pigment and pearl for ultra-impact color! A jet-milled base and silicone technology deliver longwearing, stay-true color for hours of crease-resistant wear. Enriched with Macadamia Oil, each shadow provides continuous moisture that improves the appearance of the delicate eye area. The shade combinations can be used together for a daring statement or individually to bring a pop of color to your look. - See more at: http://www.wetnwildbeauty.com/eyes/shadow/color-icon-eyeshadow-collection.html#sthash.FpQ5lUiD.dpuf

What does Ms. Faux think?

First of all before you judge Ms. Faux is going to go on record that Wet 'n Wild eyeshadows are as good as some high end shadows on the market.  Their color icon palette as well as other color icon shadows (save the massive holiday kits) are actually quite good.

The colors are not named, but the lower right hand corner color labeled "Definer," is a favorite, however the entire palette is quite good and I really use all the colors.  This week however that second row "definer" color (the last one in the swatches below) has been my jam.  I'm really digging holographic shadows right now (tomorrow's blog will be about holographic cosmetics).  This one reminds me of a couple of high end holographic colors (check out tomorrow's blog).  Such a gorgeous color.  Also both "eyelid," colors are go to favorites.

First 4 Swatches: First row top to bottom
Second 4 Swatches: Second row top to bottom
2.  Redken Pillow Proof Express Primer $22 at Ulta.com (Currently on Special for Buy 2 Get 1 Free)

What is it?  Ulta.com...

Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer with heat protection - Microflex stylane creates a 'thermal blanket' of flexible silicone resin that protects hair and helps prevent breakage. Trisiloxane and isododecane allow for quick drying, resulting in a smooth and silky finish.

Benefits:
  • Cuts blow dry time
  • Anti-breakage
  • Protects up to 450 F

What does Ms. Faux think?

It is winter so Ms. Faux will take to blow drying her hair a bit more which can lead to damage on her crazy fine hair.  I also hate the time it takes to blow dry my hair.  This product solves both issues.  It is a heat protectant and also definitely cuts drying time.  I can't imagine my hair without this product right now because it cuts drying time in half if not more.  I love it.

3.  Redken Diamond Oil Glow Dry $32 at Ulta.com (Currently on Special for Buy 2 Get 1 Free)

What is it?  According to Redken.com...

Hair Oil Treatment For Dull, Dry and Damaged Hair by Redken Glow Dry. Protective hair treatment smoothes, softens and conditions hair while strengthening.

Product Benefits

  • Heat-responsive, ultra lightweight hair oil
  • Provides Diamond-like hair shine
  • Reduces blow-dry time
  • Fast, easy style for all hair types

What does Ms. Faux think?

Hunties.... it has replaced my beloved Matrix Oil Wonders Hibiscus Color Caring Oil.  Not only does this product leave the hair feeling silky smooth and not oily, it makes it soooo shiny and manageable.  Also the gorgeous glass container is so lovely that you will even want to leave it out on your countertop.  I am not a packaging fiend, but when it is this pretty... well.... sign me up.  Smells great, works wonderfully.  I am sold.

Also for those who were wondering what I sealed out my Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal with, it was none other than Redken Wax Blast 10 $18 at Ulta.com.  It is a texturizing spray, meant to give volume.  I will review it later as I have not yet use it enough to have an opinion.

4.  L'Oreal Voluminous False Lashes $8.99 at Ulta.com  (Currently Buy 2 Get 1 Free)

What is it?  According to Ulta.com...

The power of sculpting fibers give you an outrageous, false lash look from any angle with this fiber volumizing mascara by L'Oreal.
  • Incomparably volumized
  • Extended new lengths
  • Infinitely structured
  • Incredibly curled
  • Waterproof

  • What does Ms. Faux think?

This mascara does what it says.  If you are are looking for long, uber dark lashes that curl and are just amazing... this is the mascara for you.  The waterproof version is difficult to remove, but they do have a non-waterproof version that is likely better.  Not sure why I bought the waterproof version.  Seriously though your lashes will be Major Darling.  It grabs everything.

    5.  Nugg Hydrating Face Mask Camellia Seed Oil & Spirulina Extract $3.29 for 1 Mask (Currenly Buy 1 Get 1 Free) at Target.com or $16.45 for a box of 5.

What is it?  According to Target.com...

Best for: Normal or dry skin

2014 & 2015 Allure Best of Beauty Award Winner.

Nügg’s high performance, single-use Hydrating face masks to intensively hydrate and replenish dry, de-hydrated skin in just 5 to 10 minutes. It is formulated with 94% natural or naturally-derived ingredients and with a powerful blend of precious natural oils and extracts. Key ingredients include Camellia Seed Oil, Spirulina Extract, Aloe Juice and Glycerin to intensely hydrate skin and help skin retain moisture.

    What does Ms. Faux think?

I tried this mask on a recommendation and ladies... and gentlemen for that matter I am hooked.  My face was a bit dry and this mask made short work of that dry skin, turning it to a moisturized dream.  It worked as well as my GlamGlow ThirstyMud and my Alchemie Forever Kantic Brightening Moisture Mask, both more expensive.  That being said those masks do sit better on the skin while they are working, but the end result is the same.  I am in love.  Also they claim to be a single use mask.  I found that you can use 1/2 and put the other half in a ziploc back and place in the fridge for later use.  So the price is more like $1.65 per mask.  It's also an Allure Beauty Winner!  Can't go wrong.

So there you go.  The fab five products that kept Ms. Faux from looking a fool.

Have you tried any of these products?

Day 17: #30daysofselfcare - The Only Opinion of You That Matters is Yours

A few years ago I went through a horrendous ending of a relationship with a person.  I soon found out that the person put some crap out there about me.  My concern???  I had done everything in my life to protect people's perceptions of me.  I know now this is a pointless endeavor.  The funny thing was, I couldn't tell you one single entity that I worried having a negative opinion of me, it was just in general a blanket of worry about what people thought.  Perceptions.  Things you cannot control.

It took words from my very dear friend Eric who conveyed probably one of the best pieces of advice I have ever been given.  I'm paraphrasing him, but essentially it was, "what do you care what people think?"  "You can't control it and it is only affecting you."

The truth is, in the situation I knew who I was.  I was someone that even in the most difficult of times, still put another person before myself until it just became too much.  Fortunately, I did recognize when that was.  In the end when it was time to just stop, I cut communication.  I did not try to tarnish a reputation.  I spoke only to my friends regarding the issue and that was enough.  They took care of my well being, I knew again who I was.

It reminded me again of my grandfather who would offer, "Be you.  No one can take that from you regardless of how hard they try.  Truth always finds a way, but don't even be concerned with that."  That really kept playing through my head over and over.  At that moment I took on the idea of one of my favorite women of all time... CoCo Chanel.

    Today's Self Care:

    1.  Continued not to exercise due to my lungs and was o.k. with it.
    2.  Saw my doctor.
    3.  Cuddled on the couch with my cat.

Day 16: #30DaysofSelfCare: Patience for Myself

Patience has never been a virtue that I have had much of at all.  Never really understood why until this last year.  For me patience is a luxury that I could never have or allow myself to have and it worked on so many levels but mostly was operating on a level that I don't have patience with myself.

It is absolutely ingrained in me since I was a child that I was to be one to fix things.  To just take care of things.  To make sure everyone is taken care of, with the exception of myself.  Hence why this self care thing is so important.

Just recently some of the things that I would have pushed through in the past was...

    1.  Getting sick and pushing myself to continue to care for others rather than myself.  What I had was a nasty case of the flu.  Pushing myself would have only prolonged its effects.
    2.  Pushing myself to workout to quickly after having been sick, thus usually staying sick and risking injury.
    3.  Getting down on myself when I stepped away from my blog.  Guess what?  It has still been here when I get back.
    4.  Doing what I want or rather not catering to everyone else's needs and forgetting my own.
    5.  Patience with people.

Patience with people is one that I'm really working on.  Just recently, in the past several months or so, I have been inundated with a person in my life that is not the most savory of characters.  Definitely not a proponent of women and is a woman.  It is as if she has an axe to grind or a competition to win.  Ordinarily this would have driven me mad.  You know who that would hurt in the long run???  Me.  Now... I step back, take a breath, observe the person with clearer eyes and mobilize accordingly.  I can only change me, not a person.  So as opposed to getting bent out of shape or reacting, I listen, observe and act... but only if necessary.  It is amazing how little is actually necessary.  It has helped on so many levels.  So now...

So there you go.  Patience.  Who knew I would ever get here.  One can say that through my years of impatience I was finally patient and everything fell into place.

    Todays goals and successes:

    1.  Lungs are still not well enough to exercise... so I didn't.
    2.  Came home and took care of my home so it is clean, warm and inviting for the week.
    3.  Had a glass of wine.
    4.  Took at hot bath.
    5.  Put on a moisturizing face mask for my chapped cheeks.

Terrible Packaging But Amazing Product: Maybelline Master Hi-Light by FaceStudio Hi-Lighting Blush

Have you guys seen these?  I have to admit I have but have been put off by their packaging so never tried them.  Also... they are by Maybelline so there is no opportunity to swatch them.  So with bad packaging (a testament to I guess how important packaging is), I probably never would have until a friend told me about them.

So what are they?  According to Ulta.com...

Light diffusing Face Studio Master Hi-Light blush and bronzer formulas have an expert balance of shade and shimmer illuminator for natural glow. Skin goes soft lit with zero glitz.

That description was a bit crap so I looked on the Maybelline website for a bit of a better description...

    Light-boosting blushes and bronzers.
Because those in the know don’t overglow.

    Why You'll Love It

Each light-boosting blush and bronzer palette has an expert balance of 4 shades + shimmer for a natural glow.
Skin goes soft-lit with zero glitz.
    • 4 Blush Combinations for natural-looking color and illumination.
    • 2 Bronzer Combinations for a balanced bronze glow.
    • Fragrance Free. Non-comedogenic. Suitable for all skin types.

    For Best Results

Brush over all shades in the palette and gently sweep over cheekbones, brow bones, and temples, or anywhere light naturally touches the face.

Expert Tip: Blend all 4 shades together or use each one individually. Use shimmer shades for an increased highlighting effect under brow bones and darker shades below cheekbones for additional contouring and definition.
    What does Ms. Faux think?

I have to say Maybelline, as should be, offers a much better description.  So here are my thoughts...

I do love these.  Pros:  It is a subtle look with just the right amout of illumination.  I will definitely be using these as blushes as that is their best use.  Nude I do believe is my favorite.

Cons:  I ask you... Who could possibly pick out the light and dark shades in this palette to use as highlighters and contouring?  Silly.  Just silly.  I could however see using the nude one as a highlighter.  It is absolutely stunning.  Darker complexions could likely use the others as highlighters as well.

Please note I only used the blush versions of these and not the bronzers so I do not have an opinion of the bronzers, but otherwise it does provide a gorgeous illuminating flush.

Faux Favorite Holiday Palettes: Tarte High Performance Naturals

So the thing Ms. Faux likes about a good Holiday Palette is to try out new products.  They are typically value packed and the chances are you will be finding at least a thing or two you like.  Which brings me to today's palette.

What is it?  According to Ulta.com...

Leave them blushing with this darling set of 4 travel-friendly Amazonian clay blushes in an exclusive mix of limited-edition holidaze shades. Packaged in a decorate gift box, the delightfully deluxe compacts can be broken up and shared as 4 separate presents or as one juicy gift for your favorite blush enthusiast. Infused with skin-balancing Amazonian clay, these nutrient-rich blushes complement all skin types for 12 hours of fade-free, flawless wear to leave you glowing all night - starting at the first blush!

Dermatologist tested. Formulated without parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, triclosan, synthetic fragrances and gluten.

    A $60 value!

    Shades:

    • Ecstatic (matte nude melon)
    • Epic (matte poppy pink)
    • Embellish (shimmer plum rose)
    • Entertain (shimmer rosy pink)

Using a blush brush, wear each shade alone or layered for a custom, holidaze flush.

Clockwise from Upper Left: Entertain, Estatic, Epic, Embellish

    What does Ms. Faux think?

So Ms. Faux has been preached to about the beauty of these blushes for years, but never has stopped and picked one up.  These are .05 oz. and the regular size blushes are .2 oz. and $28 each.  So they are larger, but lets be real... when have you ever used an entire blush?  If you are like Ms. Faux, you haven't... so these are the perfect size for testing, travel, use, etc...

I have also been preached to, to not swatch these with your finger.  The clay and pigments pick up better on a brush rather than with your finger.  Also the oils of your finger cause your blush to get cruddy, so unfortunately my swatches aren't the best here.

They do indeed have more pigment when using a brush and I see Embellish as part of my immediate fall future.  Entertain however is a gorgeous every day color.

I think these blushes are AMAZING and am happy with the holiday palette sizes .

My Lips Are Killing Me: Korres Lip Balm Review & Chapped Lips Rescue Tips

O.k. so that isn't entirely a joke.  This weekend I had the worst chapped lips.  Created from one part stress, one part illness and one part elements... they were scaly, chapped and cracked.  Overall just uncomfortable.  Also... I kept forgetting to put balm on.  My bad.

So recently I went on record about my byTerry Baume de Rose on Fab Five Friday: 11.13.2015 post.  It is incredible.  It is amazing.  It completely will turn your lip around over night.  My evil cat is using it currently as a toy so I will have to go digging under furniture to find it.

Besides Baume de Rose, even with its $60 price tag is not necessarily the best to wear out in public as it has a very pale appearance and on Ms. Faux's porcelain skin, she just looks like a zombie.

I even mentioned Bite's Agave Lip Mask ($26 at Sephora.com) which again is a gorgeous option, although it is a little bit sticky.  Though like Baume de Rose, it does come in a color option, but the overall look of it is clear so not zombie making.

And we all know Ms. Faux's love for the crazy affordable Smith's Rosebud Salve ($6 at Ulta.com).

But today I add a new favorite to this list.  It comes in the form of Korres Lip Butter $12 at Sephora.com.  I got mine in the color Jasmine.

Reasons I love this balm.  It is crazy soft and feels really good on your lips.  It comes in completely natural and wearable colors.  I want the other ones.  And it is lovely sheer color.  I mean, look at these swatches.

Clockwise from upper left: Jasmine, Quince, Wild Rose, Pomegranate
Just lovely and it gets the Ms. Faux stamp of lip balm approval.  Not a real thing, but if it was it would look like this.

So there you go... Some of Ms. Faux's new favorite balms and a NEW ONE.

Day 15: Self Care By Caring For Others

Sunday's day of self care involved the caring of someone someone else during a difficult time.  My dear friend Ms. Kat had a fire at her building the night before.  Though she will not have lost everything, all of her belongings were crated up and moved to a location for salvaging.  She however has been displaced and I could only imagine how scary that must be for her.  I imagined how I would have felt and that is all I needed.

There is an intense satisfaction that you get when helping those that are in need.  It is less about you and I believe more just about being the right thing to do.  It is how you should be in my opinion.  The satisfaction I believe comes from the feeling that it's just right.  It is how it should be.

It also elicits a feeling that I predominantly felt around my grandfather.  I was so proud of that man.  he was the kindest and would do anything and everything for anyone, but especially for those people very dear to him.  It is something I have worked for my entire life, but I feel I will always be short of him.  I keep trying though.  It is how I feel toward my friends however.

So today's self care was all about making sure my friend was comfortable and it comforted me in a way that I really and truly cannot explain.

New Rimmel: Oh My Gloss! Lip Gloss Review

    Rimmel London: OH MY GLOSS!

Rimmel London has seemingly just launched it's OH MY GLOSS, lip glosses for $5.49 at Target.com.  This may not be the only place they are, but so far they are the only place I have seen them.

What are they?  According to rimmellondon.com...

    • Up to 6 hours of colour, shine, comfort and moisture for your lips.
    • Lip Loving gloss with Argan Oil and Vitamin E.
    • Featuring Rimmel’s ‘Gloss Lock’ technology, which delivers an elevated, long-lasting 3-dimensional shine.
    • Non-sticky, lightweight and comfortable to wear.

    What does Ms. Faux think?

If you are looking for a lot of color, move on.  These glosses give a sheer hint of color in a non-sticky and moisturizing gloss.  If you like a gloss you can layer and sheer/nude color... read on.

It comes in an array of colors and only the hot pink and red colors provide any sort of COLOR pop, but then again it is sheer.  Maybe good if you can't quite commit to a red or simply like layering or a more natural look.

These glosses are not for color, but maybe that everyday nude lip with a more dramatic eye, a more natural look or like I said earlier... layer it over your favorite lipstick for a punch of glossiness.

These are the softest lip glosses with a lot of shine payoff and at $5.49... worth every penny and then some.

Have you tried this product?  What did you think?

Day 14: Looking Back for Forward Progress

So the other day I wrote about narcissists.  It stirred up some old stuff in me and I didn't know what quite to do with it.  This is mainly because I was quite indifferent today to those feelings and I remember in the thick of dealing with my narcissist it was quite different.  It was extremely tumultuous and I questioned everything.  It was a feeling I never wanted to feel again and the reason that any good medical professional will tell you the only way to deal with a narcissist is to cut contact.

So knowing this you can imagine my concern that I wanted to read a couple of the articles that I read then on narcissism, but did not know whether this would benefit me now or not.  I knew in this moment I felt indifferent to my narcissist, but would this stir something up.  Well if anyone knows me I go trial by fire.  Besides, now I have the support system to handle it and included in that system is myself.  Deep down I knew that my trip down that rabbit hole was not going to make that much difference so I did it.

What I discovered is all those those traits that back then I thought... "maybe, I don't know,"

This time I was like, "check. checK, cheCK, chECK, cHECK, CHECK!!!"  Still I wasn't hard on myself.  I was actually proud to now have discovered that I always knew these things about the person, but never trusted myself.  So in this case looking back actually was good.  It didn't help me move forward, but it was interesting that I actually gained comfort from doing so.

So I'm not completely saying you should look back.  I'm saying look back only in a sense that you think it might help you see clearly your progress.  I still believe that I was not ready to look back at that time in my life until about 6 months ago and even then I waited 6 months.

That seems a bit jumbled of thoughts, but I know what I'm saying, hopefully you get it as well.

    Today's goals met:

    Hot Yoga
    Drank My Water
    No Alcohol
    No Junk Food

    Saving a Thrashed Throat

First off Ms. Faux is by no means a doctor, but she did used to work for some back in the day when going to college.  Below are a few things I learned from them when dealing with fevers and severely sore throats as well as a product I would love to share as one that rivals my beloved Riccola Cough Drops for greatest Cough Drop Ever.

So take this advice at your own risk, because remember... Ms. Faux ain't got no Ph.D.!  They have however worked.

Tip 1:  Alternate Advil and Tylenol to bring down a fever

Don't ask me the science behind it but it apparently works.

Tip 2:  For a severe sore throat make the following mixture, gargle and spit out (DO NOT SWALLOW).

Mix in a 1:1 ratio liquid Benadryl and Malox.  Doctor's refer to it as the Magic Mouthwash.  If you can get a prescription for a liquid lidocaine that has also been added on a 1:1:1 ration.

The doctors I worked for recommended this for severe sore throats, thrush and canker sores as a mouthwash and/or gargle.  The Benadryl attacks the inflamation and Mylanta soothes the area.  I swear by this concoction and will use it when I get my severe sore throats.

Tip 3:  Possibly taking over as my new favorite cough drop is...

What is it?  According to YoungLiving.com...

Thieves® Hard Lozenges will refresh your mouth and breath and provide soothing relief for your throat. Lightly sweetened with the low-glycemic sugar maltitol, these lozenges deliver the power of Thieves®, the university-tested essential oil blend, along with the flavor of natural peppermint and lemon essential oil.

    Ingredients

Lemon (Citrus Limon) rind, Thieves®: Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) flower/bud, Lemon (Citrus Limon) rind, Cinnamon(cinnamomum verum) bark, Eucalyptus(E. radiata) leaf, Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) leaf oil, Peppermint (Mentha piperita) leaf, Pectin, Stevioside (Stevia rebaudiana) leaf, water
    What does Ms. Faux think?

Well like Riccola, I love that these are all natural, but more than that I love that the clove helps to numb your throat while all of those other oils help to soothe just everything.  They are medicinal tasting and I just love them.  Thought they don't claim the same claims as their essential oils (See in my blog about favorite cold remedies), I do feel like they helped with my recovery.

So there are a few ways that Ms. Faux stole from her doctors on how to fight a cold.

Have you tried any of these remedies?  What did you think?

Any remedies you would like to share?  Ms. Faux want to know.

Leave it all in the comments.

    Day 10, 11, 12 & 13: #30DaysofSelfCare - Being Gentle

So as ya'll know Ms. Faux has been a bit under the weather as of late.  On days 10 and 11 I spent most of my time breaking fevers and the 12th and today just recovering a little more.  At first I worried about my blog, about work, about appointments and then I just said STOP!  This worry and stress was not going to help me get over the flu.  All that would be there when all was said and done, but if I kept pushing and stressing it was not going to help.

I know for a fact that regardless of who I think I am, when you are sick, you are sick.  It really evens and in my case demolishes the playing field.  There are things I could not do.  My fever was 101.7 degrees.  I just let go and got better.

I've seen the above quote a million times.  Most times I have used it in relationships with others, but this was the relationship I had with myself.  It is so punishing that I feel I have to excel and don't get any down time.  It isn't something imposed upon me by other, but rather myself.

Don't get me wrong people will take advantage of what I'm willing to give in those situation where I feel too sick to function much less perform.  They aren't going to tell me no.  They are getting what they need, only I am to blame for the punishing of myself.

I remember one trip to an appointment I had once.  I had earlier fallen on some ice and busted open my knee.  It needed stitches.  I however, put a band aid on it and kept the appointment.  The person at my appointment noticed it and asked what I had done.  It wasn't hard to notice because the entire knee was bloodied at this point down my leg.  They asked, "what are you doing here?"  Even that person knew I should not have been there.  My being all things to all people was me.  Granted there are again those that will take advantage, however it is up to you to stop the cycle.

O.k. now I have ran on at the mouth, but the moral of this story is that when you are sick it is reasonable and honorable to treat yourself with kindness and be gentle.  Everyone gets sick after all.

Goals on all of these days...

    Get well.

    How did I do???

    Still working on it.

    Love and Peace,
