Fauxshold Tips: Bathroom Decor &

Hey hunties...

Here is something that Ms. Faux has done for a long time at the recommendation of a little French lady that works with her in her office.  That is the subject of bathroom decor.  Also... kitchen decor, but that will be another post.

Now I do understand aesthetics do range from very simple to ornate and from clean to bold colors.  It really depends on the person.  But this tip is to allow decor in most ranges and allows you to change less expensively when you tire of a certain look.

For example: Ms. Faux's bathroom is more medicinal looking.  It is black and white with glass decor.  I wanted it almost to look like a pharmacy/spa.  I also wanted to be able to change it up if I wanted and by making these simple choices it is easy to do that.  With these choices, changing up my bathroom is as simple as painting the walls.  What are those choices?  That is where the little, old French lady comes in.  She decorates mainly with glass and/or white accents and never anything very descript.  It is usually very clean and elegant.  ELEGANZAAAAAAA!

Translation:  "Elegance is the only beauty that never fades." - Audrey Hepburn

So I began the task of clean looking decor in my bath.  First stop... labels.  The one thing Ms. Faux does not like is labels and she mostly puts all of her body washes, lotions and shampoos in glass pumps like these Threshold Oil Can Bath Coordinates $7.99 to $12.99 at Target.com.

It makes a beautiful/colorful addition to the bath as it takes on the color of the liquid inside it.  I will however admit to it being a little confusing if you have guests, but there is a way around it that I discovered out of necessity.  I bought a glass spray bottle to put some shower spray in it.  Glass spray bottle $11.98 at Amazon.com.

The dangerous part is shower spray typically has bleach in it and I didn't want anyone to get that in their eyes or spray it on them without knowing what it is, so I labeled with these Vinyl Letter Stickers $8.99 at Amazon.com.  So the issue with labeling can be solved.

Still, since it is mainly me in my tub, I do leave most of my bottles unlabeled.  I do recognize however since I had a guest this weekend that it might not be bad to do a guest set that is labeled with shampoo, conditioner, face wash and body wash.  I will also likely do a little fancier and put them in French.  Anything to make them less ordinary but remain elegant.  I find the French language to be one of the most elegant so I will likely select that.  Also... it is a warm thought of the lady that inspired me.

The only deviation I have made from the little French lady is that I also selected a metal tone.  I personally love a chrome look.  So I made sure my items were mainly based in Chrome and selected shower caddies and the like that were either chrome or close to it.  It gives a more uniform look.  But just to show how that varies, her bath is strictly white and glass and she selected accordingly to make sure that was the design scheme.  The important thing of having a design scheme is that it sometimes prevents impulse buying.

Lastly and this is a Ms. Faux rule in her house...  All towels, washcloths, bath mats, hand towels or linens of any sort are white!  Why white?  Various reasons.  #1.  It gives a spa like look.  Ms. Faux keeps her towels on a shelf in her bathroom.  #2.  It looks beautiful.  It fits with most bathroom color schemes.  Though not always the rule, most bathrooms have white in them.  #3.  It is bleachable.  This is important.  It makes for easier cleaning of mildew, when it comes to the shower curtain and white towels can get super duper clean.  Most importantly, #3. it doesn't fade.  Colored towels commonly fade within a few months of using them.  This allows more use over time while mostly retaining their color, or in this case non-color.  Again in this case Ms. Faux went with Target.com and got their Threshold Textured Bath Towels.

The ribs add a little extra texture to the bathroom which I find important.  When decorating I think it is important to mix in textures.  This happens to be a spa like look which fits right in with Ms. Faux's decor.  In terms of towels another reason Ms. Faux loves white is that you can see when all of your make-up is off on a white towel as opposed to a dark towel.

When first taking off make up, have a few cheap washcloths under your sink to take on the stains of mascara, lipstick and eyeliner.  They sell really cheap washcloths in stores, but Home Depot also has a 20 Pack of HDX Terry Towels for less than $10.

Toss some under your sink, use the rest to clean around your house.  These things are inexpensive and really good.  After removing your make up the first time, you can follow up with one of your nicer washcloths to make sure you have removed all of your make up.

Now the little bits that finish off this style of decorating in baths.  First. Ms. Faux prefers two shower curtains.  A decorative white one on the outside and a cloth liner on the inside.  "Cloth on the inside," you say.  Yes.  Again this lends itself to you being able to bleach, throw in hot water and put in a hot dryer.  All applications of which can kill mold and mildew.  My favorite is this Hotel Fabric Shower Curtain Liner $12.99-$29.99 that you can get at BedBathandBeyond.com.  It is perfection.  I also pair it with their Roller Ball Curtain Shower Rings $10.99 at BedBathandBeyond.com.  Again it is the simple touches that make the difference.  Did you notice they are in chrome.

Lastly... are the details.  Some of my favorite design ideas for the entire house are framing simple quotes.  My favorite is the Studio Decor Hanging Scoop Frame that is $7.99 at Michaels.com.

I selected it because it has a very clean French feel.  I have inspirational quotes that I change out all the time.  Simply look one up online and print it out in a pretty font on lovely parchment or textured paper.  Here is a current favorite quote regarding self care.

“Don’t sacrifice yourself too much, because if you sacrifice too much there’s nothing else you can give and nobody will care for you.” ~ Karl Lagerfeld

First I love Mr. Lagerfeld as he is a brilliant designer, but the quote is very applicable to my life right now and changes I'm making.  Also it is a nod to the French touches to my bath as he designs for the French house of Chanel.  See... you can tailor any portion of this, including frame type to your design aesthetic.  Just keep it simple.

I also add touches of ambient lighting in my bath in decorative ways.  The most simple of ways are these Silver Dollar lighted branches (above), $25.99 to 49.99 at TouchofClass.com that I put in a clean glass vase with some Preserved Deer Foot Reindeer Moss listed here at TeresaPlants.com, but I have also found at my local nursery, usually in the greenhouse.

It comes in a variety of colors, though I selected the natural one (third from the left).  It is perfect for covering up unsightly stems.  Sand is also a good option for this, but this particular application fit better into my spalike feel as well as was not as heavy since this is sitting on a small corner shelf.  This particular ambient light is great for a relaxing bath.  If the silver dollar is not your thing though they do offer various options like pussy willow, various colors of willow, cherry blossoms, flowered lights, peacock feathers... The options are seemingly limitless.  Check out the varieties here at save-on-crafts.com.  This is a #fauxfave sight.

Otherwise probably my favorite thing ever in my bath is my night light.  It was from IKEA and I don't think they sell it anymore, but just an idea how a specific fixture can provide a decor item as well as be practical.  It is their Eye Chart Wall Light.

I love the simplicity and the lighting designer in me loves the theatric nature of it.  I have hung it above my toilet so that I can go in my bath at night without tripping.

I continue to decorate with white candles with white or glass holders.  I have an antique linament jar that I found at an estate sale that is gorgeous and one of a kind.  There is another tip.  Estate sales and flea markets for one of a kind design.  Mix the old and the new.

I also entertain and think about my guests.  A ring holder on the sink is a nice touch so friends can wash their hands without worrying about their jewelry, but probably the most important thing to make my guests feel comfortable is my Homemade Poo-Pourri.  Click HERE for that blog post on how to make your own.  Poo-Pourri allows you to spritz your toilet bowl before you go to help mask embarrassing odors.  I won't reiterate that blog here as you can go read the original, but I did get the frame in and can now share the finished product.  The frame as well is listed on the original blog.

So there you go.  Some simple tips to make your bathroom interchangeable.  As you can see a simple wall color change, printing out some quotes and changing of candles and I have myself a fairly new bathroom.

One last tip that Ms. Faux ascribes to... Be a collector.  Your home should reflect YOU.  All of my items were not bought at once.  I have collected over time.  I have just been really selective about it so that all things are interchangeable.  I think the lovely Oprah said something to the effect that your home should rise up to greet you and her super cutie friend Nate Berkus noted that you should take your time and get what you want.  He agrees that your home should reflect, YOU.  Quick is not always the way to go.  Ms. Faux has been collecting on her house for years.  Some things I have had for 20 years, others I've had for 20 months, 20 days or 20 minutes.  So long as you have an idea of an aesthetic that is easy to do.
